At the heart of my mission is a commitment to storytelling that engages my audience and their community. Rooted in the classical tradition, my music draws on elements spanning diverse periods and styles, from choral works of the Renaissance to film scores and American roots music. I exercise a deep commitment to craft and detail, careful form and pacing, and structures that exist on multiple levels simultaneously, while never losing site of the expressive journey I wish the listener to take. This duality—intellectual rigor paired with emotional immediacy—is what makes my music both approachable for audiences and satisfying for performers. Whether evoking the wonders of the natural world, delving into moments of personal introspection, or tackling social and historical narratives, I seek to convey deeply human themes and embrace the tension between the complexity of contemporary life and the universal human desire for connection, hope, and healing.

 

Beyond my compositional craft, my work is also deeply informed by my dual career as an educator and advocate for the arts. My music seeks to inspire, educate, and provoke thought, and is frequently conceived in tandem with activities and initiatives that take themes from the music out of the concert hall and into communities. I believe in the power of art to not just edify and ennoble listeners, but to motivate and facilitate actions that make a positive difference in our communities, our nation, and for our earthly home.
